Star Gazing: How the new KY prospect rankings shake out now that the camps are over.

The regional camp circuit is complete and I was able to attend the Atlanta, Charlotte, Columbus, Nashville, and Chicago camps. It was a fun ride consisting of cold scrambled eggs, rubbery sausage links, copious amounts of black coffee, sunburn, and rental car fees. It was a great ride and I can't wait for the Five Star Challenge. One thing that was different this year was how many Kentucky kids were invited to the camps (pats self on the back) and how many went out and impressed.

Wadale Robinson kicked things off in Columbus winning the WR MVP award. Cameron Jones and Beau Allen impressed there and Izayah Cummings showed that he belonged. In Nashville, Jared Casey stole the show and took home LB MVP. Stephen Herron dominated everyone, losing only one rep out of what seemed like 20 to take home DL MVP and an invite to the Five Star Challenge. Milton Wright was his stellar self and also snatched a Five Star Challenge invite. JJ Weaver out maneuvered and overpowered lineman all day, Trel Riley locked down receivers, and Franklin-Simpson RB Tre Bass looked really good. Then in Chicago Demontae Crumes finally showed up to a camp and just torched DB's deep all day and by my count caught five touchdowns. Jacob Lacey was also impressive in the Windy City using crafty hand and leverage techniques to consistently get by blockers and smack the bag down.

In the end, Kentucky prospects garnered three positional MVP awards, received two invites to the Five Star Challenge (with three more potential invites looming), and upped the overall star ranking for the 2019 class.

With that being said, here are my predictions for the next rankings:

Stephen Herron gets a slight bump or stays the same, ditto for Milton Wright
Jacob Lacy did well in Chicago so I expect him to remain a four star.
Bryan Hudson was doing track stuff and we didn't get to lay eyes on him so some guys will probably move up and knock him out of the Rivals250.
Jared Casey is already a four star, he may sneak into the Rivals250.
Wandale Robinson and JJ Weaver will get four star status and be in the discussion for Rivals250 but I'm not sure if they crack the list.
Demontae Crumes will be a 5.7 three star.
Shawnkell Knight-Goff didn't show up to any of the camps he was invited to so who knows what happens to him star wise, can't see him losing his status but guys will jump him in the state rankings for sure.
Cameron Jones got a bump to 5.7 three star status.
Trel Riley will get a bump to 5.5 three star status.
Aidan Robbins may get a slight bump from 5.5 to 5.6 status.
Sam Vaughn got a bump to a 5.6 three star.
Eli Cox will be a 5.5 three star.

When the new 2020 rankings are published I expect the following things to happen:
Michael Mayer will be a four star.
Beau Allen will probably be a four star.
Octavius Oxendine will be a 5.7 three star.
Izayah Cummings will be a 5.5 three star.
Vito Tisdale will remain a four star.
Walker Parks will be a 5.6 or 5.7 three star.
Dane Jackson will be a 5.5 three star.

If I forgot anyone let me know in the thread.

Which schools won the state of Kentucky for the 2018 recruiting cycle?

Purdue wins Kentucky in 2018

Purdue flipped coveted Army All American receiver Rondale Moore from Texas but they also snatched five of the top-fifteen in-state prospects. Safety Cory Trice was ranked number five in the state by Rivals, the 8th ranked prospect in offensive tackle Will Bramel, offensive guard Charles Allen was ranked 11th, and safety Kadin Smith was ranked 13th. All prospects were three star recruits and Moore, Trice, and Bramel were top-ten. The former Trinity HS graduate, Jeff Brohm, definitely walked his dogs in his home state

Coming in second was Miami of Ohio, who got a steal in three star Covington Catholic QB Aj Mayer, the state's tenth ranked player (who should have been ranked higher) as well as his teammate Kameron Butler, who was ranked twelfth in the state.

Marshall gets honorable mention and could arguably be ranked second with a haul that included the fifth ranked player in the state in AJ McDuffie who dominated as a Senior racking up over twenty two sacks. The Thundering Herd also pulled in four of the state's best offensive lineman in Trey Livingood, Zack Ferris, Dalton Tucker, and Ethan Bingham. Marshall went into the trenches of the bluegrass and bolstered their offensive line and got the state's best 2018 edge rusher in McDuffie.

Herron is keeping his options open, but still strongly committed

As National Signing Day 2018 comes and goes, focus turns to the 2019 class. And with it, the crown jewel of the Commonwealth’s in-state class this cycle Louisville (Ky.) Trinity defensive end Stephen Herron.

Kentucky Preps caught up with the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Michigan commit and asked him about his plans for the next year.

On his Recruitment:

“I definitely want to keep my options open.” Herron said. “It’s never a closed door until you sign.” Explaining, “At the end of the day, I definitely want to keep my options open, but I am verbally committed and it’s pretty strong. I might take a few [Official Visits], but I won’t go all over the country.”

Herron also told KP, he has no interest at all in the early signing period. He doesn’t see any issue with taking the full allotted time to make sure he’s making the right choice.

The four-star has two state championships and is aiming his sights at a third to end his high school football career. There’s also something else he would like to accomplish in his senior campaign. “I want to see if I can get Mr. Football.” Admitting, “[Between] Wandale Robinson and Milton Wright I have some competition.”

Herron also has a blueprint on how he’s going to win the award given only to seniors. “I have to have more tackles than last year. I had 98 tackles, I couldn’t get over the 100 [tackle] hump.” he said. “I’ve got to get that number up. And I have to come out with more sacks -- I need 20-plus.”

As far as plans for the spring and summer go, “I’ll be doing the big camps like Adidas Five-Star. Hopefully, I can get to The Opening too. You know, the big ones. I won’t be camping at any schools.”

Pretty normal itinerary for a prospect of Herron’s stature, going into his last year of high school.

“I’ve been told I would most likely get my invite [to the U.S. Army All-American game] during the spring.” also pretty normal for an elite-level prospect, but nevertheless an achievement. “I definitely want to play in that game – it’s a goal for me.”

In the immediate future, Herron has nothing planned, although he said “I’m definitely going to talk to Michigan about visiting as soon as I can get up there.” Right now, he’s concentrating on wrestling and his grades. However, a visit to Ann Arbor could come in about two weeks when Trinity has winter break.

Contact between Herron and the Wolverines is at a “pretty normal amount” by his standards. “I wouldn’t say it’s too much or too little. I think it’s where it should be. We always have good conversations about football, about where I would fit in at, where I would play in the scheme. So I can’t wait.”

When asked if other schools are still actively recruiting him, Herron told KP “Definitely,” Continuing by revealing, “Stanford has visited four times in the last month.”

Early on, it was obvious the New Albany-native was interested in the Cardinal. And apparently still is along with some others, “Stanford was a good school for me. I definitely still consider Stanford, highly. I consider Florida, highly.”

The Gators have a peculiar relationship with Herron. “Coach [Todd] Grantham gave me my first offer. I’m really close to him, I was really close to his son when he was at Trinity too.” Finishing, “I really still like a lot of things about Florida and Stanford.”

Other than that, Ohio State and Clemson are in contact on a weekly basis.

The Commonwealth’s top prospect has an eventful year ahead of him, until next signing day. How eventful, is still to be determined.

Mid-Season Championship Picks

I thought it would be interesting to see everyone's mid-season championship picks based strictly on the first half of the season. A lot more ball left to be played, but here are my picks as of today:

1A: Beechwood (4-1). I really want to go with Paintsville here because I know a couple of their players. Watch out for Hazard. They could be a sleeper if their defense keeps playing well.

2A: Danville (6-0). I like what I've seen from the Admirals so far. Mayfield always has a shot. I like CAL as well, but we'll be able to tell more about them after next week's match-up with DeSales.

3A: Corbin (4-1). I'm taking a shot with Corbin. I think this is their year after Belfry's domination. However, we shouldn't count out the Pirates. Boyle County will be my 2nd pick. They're good enough to win it on any given day.

4A: Johnson Central (5-0). It's theirs to lose until someone else steps up to compete. Second tier teams with an outside shot? Wayne County and Collins would be my next two.

5A: Covington Catholic (6-0). The Purples are still a great team, but I don't think they're standing alone like in years past. They're very beatable. I'm anxious to see the Bowling Green/South Warren game. That will determine the pretender/contender between the two.

6A: Trinity (6-0). Tonight's game with St. Xavier will be telling. Upsets can happen, but it looks like a two horse race to me between those two.
