Bowling Green v. Owensboro since 1932

Once upon a time the Red Devils held a commanding 32-11 lead in this series.

Since 1987 BG has won 19 of 25 games and has closed the overall gap to 38-30 still in favor of Owensboro.

BG has won the last five meetings by an average of 41-10 including a 62-0 beating in 2011. The last Owensboro win was in 2008 at BGHS in the second round of the 5A playoffs.

At the risk of comparing historical notes with Macdon, my sources have the series at 38-32-2, in favor of the Red Devils. BGHS has gone 21-6 in the last 27 (beginning with the 1987 game). Three of those six OHS wins came in the '99 and '00 seasons. 2000 was the last time OHS beat BGHS at Rash and the last regular season win for OHS against the Purples.

From 1956-86, OHS was 20-1-1 against BGHS.

To be fair, these teams didn't play 2001-2006, so I think their has only been 3 games at Rash since the wins you reference

I missed the 2007 35-13 BG win and the regular season win in 2009 26-21. Sorry Red Devil fans.

Regarding that long futile streak starting in 1956.....those were years that the BGPS system put grades K through 8 in the eight elementary schools. There was no Junior High football most of those years. That will be the albatross around the neck of Logan County football until they create a Logan Co Junior High.

BGHS vs Owensboro: This will be the 73rd BGHS has played Owensboro more often than any team on their 2014 schedule. It also marks the second straight week that the Purples play an opponent that has a series advantage over BGHS....Owensboro will be the fourth consecutive opponent to enter a game with BGHS with an undefeated record in 2014...While Owensboro leads the series, BGHS has won the last six contests between the two schools. Since 1987, the Purples are 21-7 against the Red Devils. Owensboro has not won a regular season game against BGHS since 2000. That is also the same year that the Red Devils last won a home game against BGHS. From 1956-86, OHS was 20-1-1 against the Purples. The series started in 1932 meeting between the Purples and Red Devils.

BG has dominated as of late, I have huge respect for them. They have always been competitive in losing years.

"BG has not won a regular season game vs Oboro from 1998 through 2008". This is a true statement.


So saying Owensboro hasn't won a regular season game since 2000 isn't telling everything. They didn't play a regular season game from 2001-2008, and not at all between 2001-2006.

2007 BG 35-13 in playoffs at OHS
2008 OHS 28-21 in playoffs
2009 BG 26-21 in regular season
2009 BG 25-21 in playoffs
2010 BG 44-20 in regular season at OHS
2011 BG 62-0 in regular season
2012 BG 31-3 in regular season at OHS
2013 BG 41-7 in regular season

So Bowling has owned it lately, but it was competitive with some good OHS teams in 2008-2009. No one owned it from 2001-2006. 5 of these 8 games have been @ Bowling Green.

This is the best OHS team since 2009 and surely BG can't be better than their last 3 years. Although they're really frickin good. OHS' best team during this time was the 2008 team and probably the 2009 team. The 2008 and 2009 teams had to play BG at Bowling Green all 3 games. OHS won the first and lost the next two by 5 and 4 points each. Since that time it has been ownage. They have been the best team in the state and are now the best current program year-to-year in the state. I'm glad we get the opportunity to play them.

I'm super excited for this game and I can't wait to talk about it on "The Homers" on Friday. I feel like this is a great measuring stick for OHS. Can the Devils compete at a state championship level? We will find out on Friday. Then UK plays at Florida on Saturday night in another measuring stick game that I'm super pumped about. Win or lose, I'm going to find out a lot about OHS and UK this weekend. I fully expect both to lose but you never know.......

I don't know if it is possible not to be excited for this game. I never had the opportunity to play Owensboro and am sad I did not. My grandparents live in Owensboro, I spent a lot of my childhood there, and I have never been inside Rash

. I did however have the awesome opportunity to watch my little brother play Owensboro in 2009 and that was a spectacular game at BG! I'm looking forward to listening in on this game tomorrow night.

During that time. Every game was at Rash Stadium. Just like the basketball region in the sportscenter many years ago, which now they play the region tournament there. KWC beat the Boston Celtics in the 80's in the sportscenter. OHS has beat the San Francisco 49ers at Rash very secretive so the press wouldn't find out.

Bill Walsh on the sidelines at Rash Stadium circa 1984 - OHS went on to beat Walsh inside Rash. Then the 49ers went on to win the NFC west with a 15 - 1 record - only loss that year coming from OHS.

The "Rash Mystique" is a myth.

It exists only in the minds of OHS's opponents.

The BG/OHS series is one of one team or the other being fairly dominant for several seasons.

The first 20 games went 8-11-1 in favor of OHS.

The next twenty were 2-17-1 in favor of OHS.

Then 14-6 advantage BG.

The last twelve 8-4 BG.

Here is a crazy stat. From 1934 until 1989, Paducah Tilghman was 31-4 verses BG.

The stadium holds no magic. The 1999 and 2000 OHS teams were State Runner-Up's and the 1993 teams at BG, OHS, and WC might have helped make up one of the best non-Louisville districts in state history. When OHS has been better, they have won. Two of those came in double overtime. Bottom line, the "Rash Magic" seems to be that the best team wins. I think that will happen again on Friday. The answer of who has the best team will be know around 9 PM on Friday.

Good info bear. You are correct on the 1993 district. OHS was undefeated until BG beat them in the playoffs. They had beaten BG and WC in the season, but BG played great D and won the playoff game 20-12. Hall and Tutt were the RB's on that team if I remember.

In 1993 Owensboro had drilled pre-season #1 Warren Central like 38-0. But OHS could only squeak by BG in OT in the regular season. Then they lost to BG in the playoffs. Warren Central, I believe, beat BG twice that year. Smh

I heard over 10 years ago that the districts shifted and BG received some of Warren Central's old ground. BGreen is growing, WKU is there. All of this adds up, but Wallace has done a great job. Great system he has implemented. All of this helps but the coaching staff, kids and parents deserve alot of praise. They are THE program in the state right now (condolences to Highlands and Trinity). I never remember an easy game against Bowling Green.

From the outside looking in I just think BG has put more of an emphasis on football. I think it began with hiring Coach Haley from PaducahTilghman. Bowling Green is now a football school like Danville,Mayfield,Trinity,St.X,Highlands,etc. I even think Bowling Green is more of a football town. They have travel fball at the grade school level there. Owensboro SR has been a solid football program but I've never viewed Owensboro as a football school. And I don't think of Owensboro/Daviess Co. as a fball town. Owensboro SR has been blessed to have historically had success in football,basketball,&baseball. Another thing is I think BG has had better success then Owensboro at getting impact kids from out of their district into their program. Here's what I don't understand....Owensboro is having success against BG at the FR level....why the drop off beyond that point?!?!

Great points dchild! Bowling Green has done a fantastic job of making sure their program has taken the proper strides to reach the level of success that they're at. OHS seems to have a mentality that winning city-county is enough. I just don't think that's acceptable because I see so much more potential than that. I even had someone close to the BG program (as close as you can possibly get) tell me that they see the exact same kind of athletes as BG when they look at OHS.

Owensboro typically splits with Bowling Green at the middle school levels and the freshman level as well. The jump comes at the varsity level. Why is that? There could be several reasons, but I think the primary reason is the staff at BG. I'm not even saying that OHS has a bad staff, but rather that BG has an exceptional staff.

I fully expect this Friday to be a great game. If OHS can move the ball, the Devils have a shot. I'm just afraid that BG is going to put 9 in the box and stuff the run. OHS has a very big and experienced offensive line, so OHS may be able to run the ball regardless. We'll find out. If OHS can play close or even beat BG, then OHS fans will really start to get fired up about the prospects of making the state finals. First things first........BG, and trying to stop the evil empire's streak.

I don't believe the Bowling Green school district has expanded in a long time. Bowling Green Independent Schools and Warren County Public Schools are separate entities. They have been in a protracted battle about kids crossing district lines. It's gotten quite bitter.

A lot of kids cross over to attend the BG schools because they (in particular BGHS) are perceived to be superior schools academically.

Bowling Green has tremendous support. There are a lot of second and third generation players. There are people in the stands at BG games that were watching when the Purples played up on the Hill in the Colonnade Stadium. It's a great network and Purples take care of their own.

People ask, "What's a Purple?" If you are one you don't have to ask. If you're not....You're not going to understand.

Just for fun...from Owensboro's all-time list of scores, I found a game played between the two schools in 1915.

October 16th; 2nd game of the season; Owensboro the winner 51-0; B.C. Evans was the Red Devils' coach. That was the only game between the two before 1932.

Owensboro played 7 games that year and won 6 by shut-out. The other was a 12-0 loss to "Louisville."

It was 38-8. Bad enough without you taking away their only score! Those two wins over BG are one of only a few times WC has beaten them in consecutive matchups and the only time they beat them in the postseason. Central has never beaten them three straight times. Odds are now they never will.
