2016 in-state UK-commit pushing hard for 2016 in-state WR to commit

This weekend, the Kentucky football program hosted a good sized group of underclassmen as well as a few official visitors from the 2015 class.

Among those underclassmen was the cornerstone of the Wildcats 2016 recruiting class Versailles (Ky.) Woodford Co. offensive lineman Drake Jackson. Jackson has already stated that he was going to start recruiting for his class at Kentucky.

And in the first week Kentucky held visits for underclassmen, he was on the job. Although he's not the only Jackson trying to help out.

He and his father, Brian, took the opportunity to make a hard push at Louisville (Ky.) Male wide receiver Keion Wakefield Saturday.

Wakefield's father, Ron, told Kentucky Preps after the visit that the younger Jackson was pushing the younger Wakefield for a commitment, right then and there. And that Jackson's father hung out with the Wakefield's the entire day.

Wakefield has always liked Kentucky, but this bond may be just the thing to put the Wildcats over the edge. I still believe he's quite some ways from making a decision.

Here's the deal:

Wakefield wants to go to Oregon, above all. But now, it's looking more and more like that offer is not going to come through, even though last summer he camped in Eugene and won the wide receiver MVP. And even if they did offer, I think his family has the feeling it might not be the best fit. There are still a lot of other options out there for him -- including Cincinnati, Louisville. Those options will be fully and thoroughly looked at before any decision is made.

Keion Wakefield - Prospect Profile

Mayfield/PTHS Alumni game

I heard about a potential game between Mayfield and PTHS alumni as a fundraiser for their football programs. That sounds like a fun game to watch...

I'm not sure how the liability works on something like that, but I think Mayfield and Graves did something similar. Don't know the details, but I'm sure the schools or boosters could give more details.

Kentucky Preps All-State Team

I find that most, if not all, all-state teams are considerably biased, and this one might in your eyes as well. I've always thought of it as everyone votes for the best kids in their area. And those who vote for kids in other areas have never really seen the kids

With that thinking, I decided to put out my own all-state team.

Why do I consider my list different from all others?

I have actually watched every kid on this list play in person, in some facet. Not only that, I've watched every kid's highlight tape and their team's biggest games of the season, on video.

So I thought I'd give this a try.

This list is based on the 2014 season, but all-star games come into play as well. It's not all about stats and wins. It's not all about who they played and when. It's about the best players in the state from a real first-hand perspective.

Some of them look familiar and were on the traditional lists, but there are a few others who I think were slow played because no one really saw them.

Here is the first ever Kentucky Preps All-State Team:

Offense:

QB - Elijah Sindelar (Caldwell Co.) Sr.
RB - Damien Harris (Madison Southern) Sr.
RB - Cody Crider (Graves Co.) Sr.
RB - Marquez Trigg (Glasgow) Sr.
WR - Keion Wakefield (Male) Jr.
WR - Zy'Aire Hughes (McCracken Co.) Jr.
OL - Drake Jackson (Woodford Co.) Jr.
OL - Mason Wolfe (Henderson Co.) Sr.
OL - Landon Young (Lafayette) Jr.
OL - Sam Murrer (Covington Catholic) Sr.
OL - Cullen Reynolds (Madisonville North Hopkins) Sr.

Defense:

DL - Nick Coffey (Russell Co.) Sr.
DL - Bryant Pirtle (DeSales) Sr.
DL - Shaun Whittinghill (Moore) Sr.
DL - Heath Wiggins (Graves Co.) Sr.
LB - Eli Brown (Warren East) Sr.
LB - Sean Hammonds (Ballard) Sr.
LB - DeVon Quincy (Lafayette) Sr.
DB - Aldwin Jackson (Seneca) Sr.
DB - Rodjay Burns (Trinity) Jr.
DB - Ta' Corian Darden (Russellville) Sr.
DB - Dee Cain (Caldwell) Jr.

Damien Harris makes his decision Friday

Kentucky's first ever five-star, Damien Harris, will make his college decision Friday. The Madison Southern running back will choose among Kentucky, Alabama and Ohio State.

The latest is that he's leaning towards Kentucky. Although he just spent a week with the top prospects from around the country at the Under Armour All-America Game, including a bunch of Alabama commits, who were recruiting him hard during his time there.

Oh and don't forget Ohio State just upset the Tide in the College Football Playoff. Not that he's picking on who finishes the best this season, it's just something to take into account.

The next one?

In football, and especially football recruiting, everyone is always looking for the next one.

The one that everyone knows, talks about. The one that everyone wonders where he'll go to school. The one that stands above all the rest.

Aside from Damien Harris and Drake Jackson, the next one might already be out there.

The "one" I'm talking about is Louisville (Ky.) duPont Manual corner back Jairus Brents who, at the time I'm writing this, graces this site's front page.

You may already know who he is -- the 7th grader who got an offer from Kentucky, the 8th grader who did the same at Louisville.

Well, he just finished up his freshman year and is about to hit the camp circuit and with his 42-inch+ vertical, 4.1 forty and elite man coverage-skills he's going to be one to keep an eye on.

I had a chance to catch up with Brents recently after his workout at former Notre Dame and Louisville wide receiver Chris Vaughn's Aspirations Gym. Here's the story.

Estill County 2015 Varsity Schedule

Week 0 - vs. Fleming County
Week 1 - TBA
Week 2 - TBA
Week 3 - vs. Lexington Christian
Week 4 - @ Gallatin County
Week 5 - vs. Powell County
Week 6 - @ Breathitt County
Week 7 - TBA
Week 8 - TBA
Week 9 - @ Knott County Central
Week 10 - vs. Berea

Was told that Magoffin County was orginially week 1 but they are in the same district now, not sure if that will stay or not.

Jackson County was Week 2 but when Coach Shearer stepped down at Jackson County the Generals dropped Estill County. Heard the other night that Estill had found a new opponent for Week 2 but no name was mentioned. Anyone?

Magoffin County, Morgan County are the remaining district opponents.

On the day of Harris' decision

sources say Harris was completely torn between Bama and Kentucky, as of a night ago.

Some are saying he's locked with Bama and also that his mother is already telling people that's the case. Though I find it hard to believe. I don't believe she would tell anyone before her son made the call.

The Bama staff is said to think it's going to go their way, but still no one really knows.

Mr. Football by class

Our neighbors to the south, Tennessee, hand out a Mr. Football award for each class as well as position grouping(back/lineman). They also don't discriminate between classes (junior, senior). And since we're approaching some of the slowest times of the year in means of KHSAA football what's better than a hypothetical award race?

Here are my winners:

1A (back) - Trajon Bright -- RB (Mayfield)
1A (lineman) - Markel Carmen -- OL (Mayfield)

2A (back) - Marquez Trigg -- RB (Glasgow)
2A (lineman) - Bryant Pirtle -- DE (DeSales)

3A (back) - Austin Hatfield -- RB (Belfry)
3A (lineman) - Nate Murray -- OT (Bell)

4A (back) - BeauHoge -- QB (Highlands)
4A (lineman) - Sam Murrer -- OT (Covington Catholic)

5A (back) - Cody Crider -- RB (Graves)
5A (lineman) - Drake Jackson -- OL (Woodford)

6A (back) - Davis Mattingly -- QB (Male)
6A (lineman) - Landon Young -- OT (Lafayette)

Eli Brown selected to U.S. Army All-American Bowl

It may have been late, but it's better than never.

Bowling Green (Ky.) Warren East four-star linebacker Eli Brown has been selected as member of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Brown tells Kentucky Preps he got the invite on Thursday. He's also unsure of when he'll leave for San Antonio, Texas. Although he claims it will be very soon.

Tune into NBC on Jan. 3, 2015 at 1:00 pm to watch the game.

Hey Mr. Broadcaster 240

Over the years I have been impressed with your vast knowledge of sports especially in western Kentucky. I am hoping you can help. We at Russellville High School have a fine young man at our school, Co Co Darden, that made 1st team all state overall. The question has come up whether he is the first to accomplish that at our school. If you have a link we can go to or any other way to find out we would be grateful. I hope this is not an inappropriate way to get information. Thanks from all Panther fans..

Officials Suspended for bad call Murray DeSales Semi Final

What do you think on this one? Looks like Mr Tackett is raising the bar on his officials. He is getting rid of the old guard and putting in people that want to make their officials better with more training. I know several old time assignors have been replaced by new guys and word has it that things are running better. Wonder when that move will be made in the Boro? Needs to happen soon before something like this happens in this area!

Mr. Football

Was on the Jeff Bidwell show this morning and we talked about the Mr. Football race.

It's a weird race right now in my eyes.

Wouldn't feel right to give it to Damien Harris just because he really didn't play this year.

Elijah Sindelar is a more viable option, though his injury and lack of a championship may hurt him.

What about Cody Crider? I mean come on he's carried Graves to this point and really been a workhorse ironman for the Eagles. I think he at least deserves an honest look and thought.

Lastly, Beau Hoge should also be considered. He's just electric. I love watching him play.

What say ye masses?

Best of Bluegrass All-Star Game

Thursday night, I had the privilege of taking in practices of both squads set to take on each other Sunday.

First, it was the state team.

The state team seems to be the bigger one. Their offensive line is HUGE. Headed by one of the best lineman in the state, Cullen Reynolds, they will have their work cut out for them with the athletic defensive line of the Metro team.

I think this group has the edge at wide receiver. With Pooh Jones (McCracken), Lucky Jackson (Lafayette), Jensen Feggins (Warren Central), C.J. Walker (Bryan Station) and slot back Jalen Washington (Frankfort) they'll have a lot of play makers on the field, at all times.

The state team will also have the game's best back in Marquez Trigg from Glasgow.

I assume Clay McKee (quarterback) will be the starter under center. This is going to be his first ever game in the spread after running the wing-t his entire career.

Then, it was the Metro team who hit the field.

Talk about athletes all over the field -- the top two being Tyler Jefferson (Doss) and Bryant Pirtle (DeSales).

And Pirtle is just the tip of the iceberg on that defensive line. The Metro team will have Ty'ron Horton (Manual) and Shaun Wittinghill (Moore) along the defensive front as well.

The Metro team has a few secret weapons.. Delvon Dunn and Malik Walker, both from PRP, may be the two best players in the state no one talks about. Without a quarterback that could really show what these two could do, they both had a pretty pedestrian year as seniors. Now with Davis Mattingly (Male) slinging the ball around these two have really come to life.

Walker has some range he can get balls that are thrown nearly any where within reach. He runs really good routes and can go up and get the ball, too. Dunn is one athletic guy, He's hard to bring down and he is trouble in open space. They both shined as much as anyone during the practice session.

If you're looking for two that are under the radar in this one with potential to have a huge game, these two are it.

Also watch out for two speedsters from the Metro team -- Arien Beasley (North Oldham) and Adrian Williams-Ralston (Western).

I'll be out at St. Xavier on Friday to watch the state team practice again, as well as on Sunday for the game.
