Is DeSales one of the best teams in the state regardless of class?

The Colts are back-to-back defending state champions and have been beating bigger schools over the last two years.

Now I pose the question, are the Colts one of the Commonwealth's best teams, regardless of class?

In 2013, they beat John Hardin and Warren Central, both 5-A competition. In 2014, they beat Warren Central again.

Now in 2015, they have beat beaten 6-A Butler. To break down these team easily, John Hardin in 2013 was one of the better 5-A teams and UK-player Matt Elam was on the team. Warren Central, however, wasn't of the same caliber.

Butler isn't much of a challenge either and the Bears lost to Meade Co. last week. So their not top caliber around the state. But the way in which the Colts dismantled them Bears the question.

Obviously I'm a little biased because I played for the Brown and White, so I'm asking you all if I'm overreacting or on the money.

I thought I would post an update for the 2015 KYMSFA Championships for this season. The play-in games start next week with the state championship game on November 1st. I'll try to post win/loss updates as the tournament occurs if there is much interest on here.

Division 1 - Defending Champion is Corbin. They were loaded last year and will be a force in high school the next 4 years. The favorite this year is probably Northern Pulaski. I only say that because they beat the defending 7th grade champion (Johnson County) earlier in the year in OT. Those two would have to be my co-favorites. My final 4 predictions are Bowling Green, Union, Meade County, & Northern Pulaski.

Division 2 - Defending Champion is Belfry. They're going for the 4-peat in that division and will probably get it. They're by far and away the favorite for this division. My final 4 predictions are Franklin Simpson, Scott County, Taylor County, & Belfry.

Division 3 - Defending Champion is CAL. From what I've seen, I really like Meece, New Harlan, and Pikeville. My final 4 predictions are Mayfield, CAL, Meece (Somerset), & New Harlan.

7th Grade Division - Defending Champion is Johnson County. The teams I like in this division are Northern Pulaski, Corbin, and Knox County. Whitley County also has a nice squad. I was somewhat disappointed that Meece didn't enter both teams into the tournament. They're good. My final 4 predictions are Bowling Green, Westport, Farnsley, & Northern Pulaski.

Look through the brackets and give me your predictions!

CJ Hayes Part 2: Interview

I had the chance to interview CJ this weekend and ask him some candid questions about his college recruitment and family life/history. I found his story to be one of hard work, perseverance, and a loving family life.

This is what he told me.

First of all, tell me about the gold cleats.
In my opinion Gold represents money and when it comes to football the end zone means money, so money plus money equals more money. Plus, I like to look different out there. You look good you play good.

You have a great family support system, describe a typical day in the Hayes’ household.
Depends on what day it is. We usually have a good routine, when it comes to football every Sunday evening we usually go over film from that past Friday game.. My dad was a baseball coach for 18 years and plus he won 2 state football titles when he played at Dollarway High in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. My mom and Dad support me like no other, without them I would be lost. Blessed to have both supportive parents.

Your Dad went to Ark Pine Bluff and your mom went to WKU, how did you guys end up in Tennessee, and then Kentucky?
My mom and dad both use to be store managers with Walmart. My mom wanted to get a little closer to her parents (my Grandparents) in Tennessee. Before Tennessee we use to live in Mississippi. It was a hard choice for the family because we really loved it in Mississippi. My grandparents (my mom’s parents) both passed away from cancer about 2 months apart. So my dad and mom decided to move to KY. We actually live in Franklin, KY and when we first moved here my dad decided that we would go to school back in Nashville but it would be to hard to travel on a daily basis. I use to go to a private school in Nashville called Franklin Road Academy and the education standards were a lot different.

During my last baseball game in TN, we played a travel team from Bowling Green, KY called the Bearcats. My dad and I had a good relationship with that organization, and this is how I met Ryder (Litton) who is our (South Warren’s) Quarterback. My dad said he thought my mom would want to move to KY when my grandparents died so he started to do his homework. He found out that you could apply to go to school at South Warren from Ryder’s Dad, Jeff. My dad and Jeff spoke a lot and Ryder and I were friends because of baseball, so the decision to attend South Warren was pretty easy. That’s how and why we ended up at South Warren.

South Warren is 9-0 charging into the playoffs and playing as a cohesive unit, what is your role on the team and tell me how you prepare in order to maintain your high level of performance. Are you a film guy, a gym guy, both? How much f the game is mental, how much is physical for you?
My role on the team is simple and that is to make plays in all 3 phases (offense, defense and special teams) of the game. I prepare for the game by watching film with my dad, coaching staff and then analyzing it myself independently. I see things on the field before they happen. I really am a good student of the game, and I study a lot. I treat football like a class, in order to be successful in the classroom you must study. Same goes for the football field. I am a film and a gym guy, so I love doing both. I really think football is 60% mental and 40% physical. It’s all about the preparation.

You seem to be asked to perform a lot of different roles for South Warren, tell me what it’s like to never come off the field and leave it all out there for your teammates and coaches every game.
I know they depend on me and that’s a good feeling. I’m a playmaker, In order for me to make plays I need to be on the field. I don’t have any siblings, so I view by teammates as my brothers and I give my all for my family. I see my dad still has a close relationship with his former teammates and I like that as well. I want to look back years from now and share stories about us winning state titles just like my dad.

If I asked Coach Smith, what is CJ’s best attribute, what does he need to work on, what would his answer be?
Coach Smith would say first I’m a respectful, hardworking student of the game. My best attributes would be the ability to make plays. He would say I need to be more patient sometimes because I get anxious and I want things to happen now.

It’s been noted that you’re a standout baseball player, are you still planning on pursuing baseball? To what extent?
What’s confusing is that I love baseball and football. My dad and I have talked to several major league teams (St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals and Boston Red Sox), several colleges (Cincinnati, Indiana State, Richmond) about playing baseball. There have been several youth league travel teams that have reached out to my dad about playing for them but they are in Louisville and Cincinnati. I used to play for a travel team in Nashville but really couldn’t make a lot of those tournaments due to football. I plan on competing in a lot of football camps around the time baseball season rolls around so I will only play baseball for South Warren during that season in order to train for the football camps. With a lot of prayer, the baseball and football thing will work itself out. What I think will happen is that I will end up going to college as a football player, and the coaches will find out about my baseball skills and ask me to play baseball as well.

Going into your senior year, what have you been doing to prepare for football camps coming up this summer.
I am going to work out with my personal trainer a lot more and not play travel baseball. I want to run a 4.4 or even a 4.3 in the 40 if possible, plus work on my hips to keep them loose and flexible. As a receiver, loose hips will allow me to get in and out of my routes, as a defensive back, I’ll be able to turn and run with the receivers more.
You are a 6’2” 195-pound athlete that threatens to change the scoreboard anytime you touch the ball, are you frustrated that you haven’t received the offers from schools that you other players like you have received?
My name is just now emerging but to be honest, it is frustrating that I haven’t received any offers on paper. I have had some great camps, I have the size and have the ability to catch the football plus I can defend as well. I’ve decided to focus on my speed. I usually run a 4.5, but I’m working on getting that down to a 4.4 or 4.3 (forty-yard dash). At last year’s Kentucky summer camp, I was clocked at 4.57 but I usually run a 4.5 when I’m training all the time. Looking back at it maybe I went to too many camps in a row. But I realize now I need to focus more on my speed, and train accordingly. Two things you can’t teach are size and speed. I have the size, now I just need to get even faster. I know God has a place for me, and if I keep working hard, the offers will come.

Tell me about what it means to have your family’s support and what it has been like putting in so many hours traveling to all the schools you have visited?
Like I stated earlier, without my families support I would be lost. My parents are trying to let me become my own man. We have been to several schools since the start of football season including: Cincinnati, Western Kentucky, Louisville, University of Kentucky, Ole Miss, Indiana, and Tennessee. We are also planning to go back to several of them again. Those schools along with others are very interested in me and we are interested in them as well. We also plan to visit Arkansas, Duke, University of Virginia, and Florida State. We were scheduled to visit Arkansas but in order for us to get there on time, we would have to leave at Midnight and I didn’t want my parents to do that, but we will make it out there eventually.
I like going to the visits, I feel like it shows them that I want to be apart of them. My parents and I, would like to thank all of the schools that have reached out, thanks for allowing me to be apart of your family.

What campus visit(s) stand out the most to you?
Looking at the schools I have visited all of them stand out in their own way. I will sum it up, not in any order:
Cincinnati—they talk a lot about education plus the student section is amazing.
Ole Miss—the student section is off the chain.
University of Kentucky ---- the student section plus overall atmosphere was super.
Indiana, Louisville, and Tennessee---- have great fan bases.
Western Kentucky ---- good atmosphere close to home.
Do you have a top school you are hoping to play for, and if so why?
Of course I have my top schools I would love to play for but I really think I should wait to announce that at a later time. The one thing I would say about this is education would play a big part of it. One school that we visited said something to me that has really stuck. “One day someone is not going to want to coach you anymore.” That had a big impact on me.

Are you open to playing any position at the college level or is your heart set on one position?
In my heart I feel like am a big time receiver, but I love playing defense back as well. I’m willing to do either to get to the next level (NFL). That is my dream.

What is a school/coaching staff getting when they sign CJ Hayes?
Simple, a winner someone who strives for excellence and won’t cause any problems.

Is there anything else that you want the college coaches out there to know about you?
Yes, I am a very respectful, coachable, and hardworking athlete that has high character on and off the field. And I’m not afraid of the weight and class room.

We will keep in touch with CJ and his family as his recruitment continues.

CJ Hayes update Part 1: Visiting UK This Weekend, Plans to Visit Duke after.

KY Varsity

by Dave Lackford

CJ Hayes is a Junior WR/DB for South Warren High School, nestled in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He does everything for his team and rarely comes off the field. He operates as a receiver in a read-option based offense and is called on to not only catch passes, but to carry the rock on jet sweeps and reverses, and block defensive backs down field. So far this year he has 7 touchdowns and has done an outstanding job manhandling defensive backs in order to spring ball carriers for big plays. As a defensive back, he has three interceptions this season as well as a fumble recovery. He's a heady corner. He stays home and doesn't let anyone behind him and is very smooth in getting off blocks and coming up to make plays against the run.

CJ is also a standout baseball player when he's not running through defenses or locking down the edge as a corner. He has division one size, standing 6-foot-2 inches and weighing in at a solid 195-pounds. He also runs a division one caliber 4.57 in the forty-yard dash, a time he says he is working hard to shave off a couple tenths of a second. He is only a junior and has already attended numerous camps. He comes from a great family that is very proactive in his recruitment. This is evidenced by the fact he has visited 7 division one programs this season, all on the Hayes's own dime. We here at R4Six, as well as some members of the internet recruiting industry I have spoken with, feel this hard work will soon pay off, and some major offers are not far away.

CJ is set to visit the Kentucky Wildcats this weekend, the second time this year, for their game against Tennessee. He has also been contacted by Duke about a visit this weekend, but he already had plans in motion for the trip to Kentucky. I was told that the Duke visit will definitely happen and he is very excited to get on campus. His most recent visit was to Western Kentucky, he said the visit went very well and he feels if he would have committed on the spot, then the Hilltoppers would have accepted.

Update on Sean Cleasant, 2017 3 Star DT from Manual

Sean Cleasant is a 6-foot-2, 275-pound, junior, defensive tackle who plays for Dupont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky. He's one of the top-five players in the state for the class of 2017, and every recruiting web site has given him a 3-Star rating. Sean also has a scholarship offer from Vanderbilt, and in-state schools Kentucky and Louisville have a close eye on him as well.

Sean isn't like most big time recruits of the internet era. He isn't very active on social media, and when asked about his recruitment he keeps his cards close to the vest. He is a man of few words, but his actions make the noise.

He didn't start playing football until 8th grade, but you wouldn't be able to tell that by watching his game. He has the ability to play inside when his team lines up in a 4-3 defense, and he can play outside in the 3-4. A lot of defensive tackles with his size rely on their physicality to bull rush against blockers. Sean brings more to the position. He uses his hands well to implement swim and rip moves in addition to the bull rush. He also shows a good motor, aggressiveness, gap discipline, and punishes ball carriers. Sean told me that coaches have told him they want him to "work on his footwork and staying low" when he fires off the line. When you add up the pros and the cons, it is easy to see why he is ranked third in the 2017 class bykentuckypreps.com.

Sean is focused on finishing the season strong for Manual High. His Rams square off against the Eagles of Eastern High School this Friday, then the Kentucky 6A playoffs begin. Sean told me that, "The season finale with Eastern is kind of big because it really turns into a grind (once the playoffs start), then (it's) win and move on, or lose and your season is over." Eastern runs a spread offense that throws the ball all over the field. I asked him how he felt about facing the Eagles' spread attack and he responded,

"I don't have a preference for the offense I like to play against. I can line up and play (against) whatever. My role in this game is just to create havoc, like my position is (designed) for, and play how I am supposed to play."

After football season Sean usually wrestles for Manual, but he told me that he isn't sure he will do so this season because he wants to focus on preparing for football camps and keeping in football shape.

I asked Sean how it felt to hold an offer from an SEC school and he told me, "It felt good getting my first offer, and knowing that I'm actually being recruited." He also wanted schools to know that they will be getting, "A great all around person who wants to get better and increase my education."

He as told me his mother motivates him to stay on track, both on the field and in the class room, instilling in him that he is capable of doing great things. I agree, Sean has a bright future ahead of him if he keeps training for football and stays in his books.

Update on 2017 WR/DB CJ Hayes

What's up guys? I come bearing info on CJ Hayes, a 2017 kid that Mike wrote an article about a week or so ago. I drove out to South Warren HS in Bowing Green KY, and watched the Spartans beat Franklin-Simpson 27-0.

CJ had a good game, he picked off two passes and returned one for a TD, which was unfortunately called back for a block in the back. He also had a forced fumble on a punt return. On offense he had one catch for 8 yards and picked up 20 on reverse. All of his numbers came on the first drive of the game, but the team elected to keep the ball on the ground for most of the game as their OLine was dominating Franklin-Simpson. CJ was targeted three times in the end zone but came up empty handed. Overall it was a good game for CJ and when he gets the ball in his hands you can tell he's a special athlete.

I got a chance to talk with him after the game and he told me the Duke University hit him up on twitter before his game last night. He also told me he has received interest from Louisville and Tennessee and that he was going to drive down to Ole Miss today for a visit and to watch them play Vanderbilt.

I also spoke to his father, who told me that CJ wants to play receiver as far as football goes but also mentioned that he is a big time baseball player and has been scouted by a few major league teams and colleges. I asked him what schools have been contacting CJ the most and he told me his son talks to Lamar Thomas often, so it appears Louisville has their eye on him. I was also told that Duke has been talking with CJ over the last few days and of course Ole Miss since they are driving down there today. Mr. Hayes also mentioned that Notre Dame, Kentucky, Cincinnati and Arkansas had been in touch with CJ recently.

Another thing I found noteworthy was that CJ's dad told me they are originally from Tennessee and they moved here when CJ was in 8th grade. It would seem that if Tennessee or Vandy made a push they would also have to be considered serious contenders.

I really enjoyed meeting CJ and his father.

CJ was very comfortable speaking with me. He gave a lot of praise to his teammates, which I really respected. He was also quick with a witty response to my questions and spoke with confidence. He's also a legit 6'2 maybe 6'3" because I'm 5'11 and he towered over me. He's also a solid 195 pounds. When you watch him play and meet him up close you can tell he's got D1 talent and think it's a mere matter of time before the offers and stars come.

Favorite / Least Favorite Teams

I thought this topic would be interesting. Who is your favorite and least favorite team IN EACH CLASS? You can give reasons or not. Who do you follow the most? Who do you want to never win another game?

1A - Favorite: Paintsville. I like Coach Chirico and what he stands for. Least Favorite: Pikeville. Bad coaching experience in 2011 with basketball. They'll always be labeled liars and cheaters to me. From the school administration down to the coaches.

2A - Favorite: Somerset. I don't "love" them because of the former rivalry with Pulaski, but I always catch myself following their success seems like. Least Favorite: Mayfield. Not really sure why. Arrogant/annoying fans maybe? Although they have a right to be.

3A - Favorite: Corbin. Coach Haddix will make it in what many thought were hard footsteps to follow. Have some very good friends affiliated with their program. Least Favorite: Lexington Catholic. They always have a big bark no matter how good or bad they seem to be. I can take it if you're good, but you shouldn't be making much noise when you're not. Referring to all sports.

4A - Favorite: Russell County. Have a lot of family and friends affiliated with that program. I do not like seeing them struggle. Least Favorite: Johnson Central. This will surprise a few. I follow their success, but my thinking goes back to middle school rivalry. Love/hate relationship for me.

5A - Favorite: Pulaski County. Of course. Least Favorite: Bowling Green. Similar to Mayfield for me. They're good and their fans like to talk. Nothing wrong with that!

6A - Favorite: Madison Central. Coach Scenters has been very supportive for some of the kids I have coached. I like the guy. Least Favorite: Trinity. Simply for the argument. I always find myself cheering against the Rocks in the finals. Nothing personal, just respect given their success.
